Weather in Turkey

If you’re planning to buy a house in Turkey, one of the important points to consider is the weather. Turkey is the 37th country with the largest acreage, which means that the weather in Turkey shows differences in climate regionally. During spring, for instance, people in the south enjoy the sunny beaches whereas people in Central Anatolia still wear long sleeves. Therefore, you should have a general opinion about the climate in Turkey’s different regions before buying property in Turkey and choosing the location to your liking.

It’s an object of curiosity for people from outside Turkey whether it snows in Turkey or not. It does, but not everywhere in Turkey. The mountainous regions get the most snowfall, whereas the capital Ankara gets annual snowfall for a couple of days. The reputable Istanbul sometimes has a bit of snow, as well. However, in the Mediterranean and Aegean areas, it doesn’t snow at all.

Let’s take a closer look at what the climates in the different regions of Turkey are like.

1. Marmara Region

The climate of the Marmara Region is a blend of subtropical/Mediterranean in the south and oceanic in the north. Istanbul, the most popular city where many expats choose to relocate, is located in the Marmara Region.

Istanbul goes through all four seasons distinctly during the year. It’s cold during the winter and hot during the summer. Spring and autumn can be quite wet, but both seasons suit Istanbul beautifully.

Istanbul has high humidity throughout the year. On some hot summer days, this can be unbearable according to the location and the position of your building. Therefore you may need an air conditioner. The humidity in Istanbul can rise to 80 percent.

The weather in the Marmara region is generally around 10°C during winter whereas it goes up to 30°C in summer.

2. Mediterranean Region

The Mediterranean Region has the best weather in Turkey. The region is a very favorable destination for summer vacations as the weather’s ideal for swimming and sunbathing for months. You can make it through almost half of the year with light clothing. The most popular cities and towns in the Mediterranean Region are Alanya, Antalya, Kas, and Kalkan.

The weather goes up to 35°C in summer and it’s around 15 degrees Celsius in winter, meaning you never experience extreme colds. The region gets no rainfall during summer while the rainfall rises up to 200 millimeters per month during winter.

If you want to enjoy the sun most of the year, the Mediterranean may be the right region for you to buy a house in.

3. Aegean Region

The Aegean Region is another very popular holiday spot in Turkey. The weather in the region resembles that of the Mediterranean; it’s hot during summer and mild during winter. The Aegean coast experiences heavy rainfall during winter. The humidity is extremely high throughout the winter and you can even expect thunderstorms most of the time. The monthly average rainfall is 100 millimeters during winter. It hardly ever snows in the region.

Bodrum, Marmaris, Izmir, and Kusadasi are the most favorable destinations in the Aegean Region. These are cities where tourism is highly developed.

4. Central Anatolia

Continental climate dominates Central Anatolia, which means seasonal weather changes can be a little harsh. It’s very hot and dry during summer and cold in winter, during which you can expect snowfall. Despite being very cold during winter and not having holiday vibes during summer, the climate in Central Anatolia is refreshing. You can always relax in the shade of a tree during the summer.

The region gets approximately 55 millimeters of monthly rainfall throughout spring at most. Therefore you can enjoy the sunshine all through spring and summer in Central Anatolia. The capital of Turkey, Ankara is the most popular city in the region, naturally. The temperature can lower down to -7°C in winter whereas it may rise up to 29°C in summer in Ankara.

5. Black Sea Region

The climate of the Black Sea region is all about rainfall. It rains throughout the year and there’s extreme humidity. Even in spring and summer, the region monthly gets about 60 millimeters of rain whereas the rain per month during winter is 130 millimeters on average. Temperature falls to 5°C in winter and goes up to a modest 25°Cduring summer. You might as well expect a little snowfall during the winter.

This heavy rainfall and humidity provide the Black Sea Region with a wonderful nature, though. If you can handle getting wet a little too often, the green landscapes of the area will definitely be worth it.

6. Eastern Anatolia

There’s an incredibly harsh weather shift during season changes in the Eastern Anatolia Region. The region’s location at a high altitude results in long and cold winters where temperatures are usually around -10°C but can go as low as -40°C. Summers, however, are hot and dry. The monthly rainfall is approximately 25 millimeters throughout the year.

7. Southeastern Anatolia

The climate of the Southeastern Anatolia Region is close to that of Central Anatolia: cold during the winter, hot and dry during the summer. During winter, the region gets around 60 millimeters of rain per month, whereas summers pass in full drought. In winter temperature can fall down to -1°C and you can expect a little snowfall. Summers, on the other hand, can get as hot as 40°C.

Turkey is a popular destination for expats from all around the world. Mild weather is one of the important reasons for this demand. As you can see, however, climate can show serious differences depending on the region and season. It’s best to consider the information we’ve provided in this post and check the current weather in Turkey before making plans to relocate or travel to the country. Enjoy Turkey!
